Question by Alexander Massacre: What are your thoughts on the upcoming remake of Dune?
So by now most of us have hopefully heard about the remake of Dune which I believe is still in the works. Or, maybe it got scrapped, which would suck. Either way, here is the question plain and simple: Would you consider a remake a positive thing that you would love to go see, or a completely unnecessary waste of time?

I personally go both ways with this. On one hand, Dune deserves a great movie adaption of itself, I mean, its only fair. Dune gave birth to the SciFi genre and is an extremely astounding and perfect piece of literary work. Lord of the rings has a few, heck even the cheap rip-off of Dune, Star Wars has six. What is Dune left with? 1 horrendous crap pile-up of a movie and a TV miniseries, plus an entire generation of kids who either don’t know about Dune, or don’t care and find it boring because they are either too dumb to comprehend it or too dumb and would rather beat the tar out of each other with plastic lightsabers.

Anyway, on the other hand, this could be a potential for extreme danger. Who is to say that this new retelling won’t be a complete train wreck? Just gotta hope for the best I guess.

Well, I am probably gonna get flamed really bad ’cause of my views, but oh well, as long as I can get some detailed replies as well ;-)

It’s been done twice and neither captured the books very well…let it rest in pieces, not peace.

i’d rather see hyperion happen.

The Lord of the Rings does NOT have a great movie adaptation of itself. Not even a little bit. It has a VISUALLY astounding adaptation…but its director didn’t understand the story at all or why tolkien wrote it the way he did, so he saw absolutely no reason to keep any of the characters true to form. Aragorn becomes this whiny little reluctant hero who’s spent 60 years running from his destiny instead of the calm and collected Ranger of the North quietly preparing to take his rightful kingship. And that is only the tip of the destruction that Peter Jackson wreaked on Tolkien’s Masterpiece.

That is always my fear with great literary works…the author of the screenplay, or the director, will not understand the story and completely destroy it for the loyal fans of the books. That has happened with Dune on more than one occasion. I’d be lying if I thought that hollywood would be able to get it right…for once. It is my husband’s second favorite book (after some series by John Ringo) and I know that he would love to see a faithful adaptation made. But we both understand that a truly well-made and faithful adaptation will never come from hollywood. Those who are rich enough to take the time without worrying about what their investors might think don’t care enough to try. And those who care enough to try don’t have the financial backing to make it happen. Let it play in the greatest theater ever created, the one housed in the imagination, and leave it be.
