Or else the final product might be incorrectly sized or may contain flaws. So this can be compensated by filling mold with resin and holding it under pressure and then adding more resin to compensate for contraction. Some complications may occur in the form of:

•Burned parts is one of the other complications that might occur from the melt temperature if set too high

•Warpage of parts may occur too due to thickness

•Imperfect surfaces due to excessive moisture in the resin or due to low pressure causing incomplete filling of the mold

•Incomplete cavity filling if injection speed is too slow causing freezing before mold is even filled

So, special attention is required to be paid to avoid any consequences. The process can be used with variety of plastic resins and the popular charts include: polypropylene, polyethylene and ABS. Every resin holds its own set of advantages and disadvantages so it has to be chosen as per their characteristics desire.

The plastic pellets are heated until it gets liquidated then this is forced through injectors into molds. The shape and size depends on the manufacturers requirements. In simple terms injection molding is the process of forcing melted plastic into a mold cavity for desired designs.

Once the plastic is cooled that part can be ejected and it proves to be quite useful for too complex or cost prohibitive parts. One can make many parts at the same time out of same mold. The injection molding process comprises of the following:

• There is this clamping which holds the mold at certain pressure to ensure uniformity in the units output.

• Then the injection unit comes where plastic pellets are loaded into a hopper that too at the top. The pellets are fed into the cylinder and heated until they are liquefied. Inside the unit there is this screw that turns and mixes the plastic till it reaches the optimum point. With force and pressure and speed controlled by the screw or ram plastic is formed.

• After all the processes a halt is given with some pressure to ensure all the mold cavities are completely filled. It is important to fill it correctly or else it will only be a scrap.

• Then the mold is let to be cooled for the desired period of time. Lack of proper timing may result the units to stick or become deformed.

• The clamping units are opened to separate the mold. And these molds can be used again and again. This is the single most important in the whole process and something that can be repeated too. That is what makes the tooling of mold to be the most expensive.

• Finally the final product is ejected from the molding machine. The finished product can be continued on a production line or stacked as parts for larger products like car steering wheel or something.

The products of plastic are used in everyday of our life without realizing the fact of all the hardwork from which it is derived. The advantages of reaction injection molding (RIM) vs. plastic injection molding (PIM) can be subtle, but it boils down to the durability and long-lasting nature of the final product. Designing and producing products made with reaction injection molding vs. plastic injection molding must address several factors including how the piece will be used, what kinds of pressure and temperatures it will experience, how durable it needs to be and whether it will it interact with other parts. This comparison merely details the benefits of RIM.

RIM Technology

RIM technology is simple enough to accomplish with a talented staff that is familiar with the process. It is a method in which two reactive liquid components are combined within a low pressure system. The two are a polyol and an isocyanate that are fed through tubing into the mixing head and then the molding area with supporting apparatus such as a metering piston and recirculation pump. Depending on the size of the item, the time to cool can be as little as three to five minutes before the mold is opened and the process can begin again. Hard tooling of the mold with aluminum or copper will experience the quickest cooling. In addition, RIM technology can be produced at a lower cost because of the molds themselves. A specialty RIM manufacturer will use aluminum molds for the best efficiency in large sizes and lower production rates.

PIM Technology

PIM occurs much like RIM without the reactions and is ideal for making a large volume of products that are very consistent in size. This process typically has a low labor cost and has few scrap losses as the RIM production does. Typically, PIM has very little finishing once the item is out of the mold, but like RIM, can have expensive tooling to even begin molding.

The Comparison of RIM vs. PIM

PIM is not an unusable process, and for some products, it can be the better choice. RIM is superior in other areas that must be noted, however.

RIM offers high impact resistance and excellent abrasion resistance that can tolerate heavy abuse without marring the surface of the item.
The elastic memory of RIM makes it more durable and less breakable.
Reaction injection molding provides a variable co-efficient of friction, a function of the normal pressure and rubbing velocity, for a broader range of applications.
Sound waves are absorbed more with PIM, resulting in noise reduction for the environment in which the molded product is placed.
RIM can be thick set molded much easier than the PIM process.
The resilience of the final result of RIM technology is tougher than PIM.
RIM has lower temperature, compression set and radiation resistance.
And finally, the lower cost tooling of reaction injection molding makes it more attractive to purchasers. RIM can handle large part and low volume production at an affordable price.

In the battle of RIM vs. PIM, the winner is clearly RIM, for durability and resistance to outside influences.

Well, if you were thinking that, you’d be disappointed but NO, it’s not quite as simple as that. As a matter of fact, plastic moulding is a little bit more complicated than that. There’s a process called plastic injection moulding that made the creation of these plastic items possible.

Plastic Injection Moulding – What type of moulding is it?

Simply put, plastic injection moulding is the process by which thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic are allowed to melt; then forced into moulds where they are cooled to take the form of the desired object.How does it work?

This process begins with an industrial engineer or designer creating a product design. The toolmaker or more aptly, the moulder maker, follows the lead and construct the mould according to the design given, using metallic materials of the aluminum and steel types and through the use of machines the constructed moulds are made to settle and take the precise shape of the original design. Once the mould designs are done according to specs, it is the only time that the actual production of plastic is carried out.

At this point, the thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic are placed in heated barrels and stirred into a blend. After all plastic materials are properly melted; certain quantities are squeezed into the mould cavity; afterwards, allowing it to cool for a certain period until it hardens into the preferred shape.What are the characteristics of this process?
