heres the link for the table:http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6015160
I purchased this table for my daughter 2 year old. I was wondering if its safe & that the paint doesnt contain lead. The top of the table & seat covers is made is made out of plastic foam. The legs are are painted pink. The reason y i question it is because some parts r painted too much & has n extra layer of paint. SOme parts dont have enough paint & u can see the black.
Would a product thats been sold around this time be checked to make sure its safe? On the box it says date of manufacutre: OCT 2007. Can u get lead poisoning by just TOUCHing it?
my daughter stood on the chair n fell off n hit her chin on the table leaving a scratch n scrapped a lil bit of skin. she hit the painted part. could the paint have gotten inside the open cut?
Ive been worrying too much since the whole lead poisoning situation happened
The box has no # i can call to ask them myself.
yes its made in china.
U would need to look close to notice the paint.
The parts the werent painted enough t black. They came that way.

No toy company in their right mind would use lead based paint!!! I’m sure the table is fine.

Lead poisoning is very rare and usually occurs with exposure to high levels of lead. Most of the lead poisoning in the US occured decades ago when most houses where made of wood and painted with lead paint. The paint would chip and children would eat the paint chips fairly frequently considering this was before much of the modern child proofing products like well made baby gates, locks, and latches.
If you are concerned many pharmacies now sell lead paint testing kits for around $ 14.99 that can be used to test an item for lead paint. Also, (atleast where I live in Indiana) the health department will provide your child with the screening for lead poising at no cost. They had a lot of these around town over last summer like at the mall. Luckily, again even with the screening no one in the US yet has been found with a level high enough to cause significant health problems yet.
What concerns me is not the paint but the design of the table. Watch your child closely with anything that folds. That is far more dangerous than paint. The table of the type is not horribly sturdy and you really have to worry about your child falling off the chairs or tabletop more than anything else.
No, you cannot get lead poisoning just by touching it. Lead is ingested by breathing in little bits of lead dust, your skin does not absorb it.
If it is really worrying you, I’d return it. But, I think it’s probably fine. And I’m sure she is okay even though she fell and hit her chin.
I know there are tons of things constantly being recalled and it is disturbing, but there is not a whole lot that you can do about it. You can boycott China, but I believe it’s some 70% or more of children’s toys and products are made there. I would bet that table is too.
If you are truly concerned, don’t keep it. Buy a wooden children’s table and chairs set that’s stained or untreated, not painted if you really like having a children’s table and chairs set.
Hope that helps a little. =/
Even if it had a number, they’re probably not going to tell you anything except that it’s safe…even if it’s not.
I noticed that it says USA and/or Imported. Does the product itself or box give anything more specific? You don’t usually have to worry about it if it was made in the USA. Most (if not all) the lead problems have been coming from China.
You can get a lead test from a store like Lowe’s and test the paint. I’ve had them work well, but I’ve also read that they’re not completely reliable. It’s inexpensive enough to try it at least.
Lead poisoning usually happens when the lead is eaten. But, by touching it and then putting her hands in her mouth, if it happens often enough it can transfer some lead. The open cut? I really don’t know about that.
The way you describe the quality of the paint makes me nervous. Has the paint chipped off where you can see the black? Or did it come that way?
I know, I get really nervous about lead too. I think, just test it first and go from there.
edit–Just looked at the other answers. The lead tests I’m talking about come in a package of 2 for under $ 5. I haven’t seen the more expensive ones, but maybe they’re more reliable.
