Do kitchen scraps need to be composted separately from yard scraps? I’ve read about smaller bins with red worms used for food waste. Then I’ve read about larger bins (wood or plastic) without the worms for yard waste like grass clippings, leaves, etc. Are these typically two separate things? Does it work better this way or can it all be combined in one bin?

One bin is actually better. The more heterogeneous the compost the better it will be. I make about 4 cubic yards of compost a year (with large stalls and a tractor) and the more kitchen scraps in with the leaves and such, the happier the worms will be. When its done, its full of fat 6 inch long worms.

The Brits seem to be angry about their “compose”. Yikes!

first off the only kitchen scraps you should be composting are organic materials. vegetables fruits nuts and beans and their cases. like banana peels and corn husks. don’t put meats and pasta in a composter. that’s trash and health hazard not to mention it attracts animals. organic food scraps can be mixed with lawn clippings and leaves. it’s actually recommended to improve the organic content and nutrients of your compost. just keep turning it every few days. i recommend the large outdoor bins.

I will assure you that you will find this not to your liking. Home Compose is a waste of time and energy. Check with your township to find a compose center that is available. By mandate most have one.
Forget the daily trip to the “pile”. A proper compost needs to have additional bacteria added to aid in the decomposition. It also needs to be turned or aerated weekly. Let us remember the fire potential from a pile of material. Does your local community even allow such a effort?
In the end you will have a pile of muted rubbish. Little if any nitrogen content and a stink. Recycle your cans and bottles but not your garbage. You are asking for no return, pest problems (rodents, disease, etc.) with zero results. Again, contact a local Extension Agent for information.
