My CD rom drive stopped working a while ago (won’t eject), so I bought a replacement. (Tried everything, and there is no little manual pinhole button on mine.) I’m having trouble removing the existing drive because the plastic face parts of the computer will not come off. They seem to have little plastic tabs- one on each side. The left side pushes in and releases, but the one on the right is in a fixed position, as if it were glued in there without give. (I’m starting to believe this computer was pieced together from scraps!!)

If I were able to remove the facing, how would I remove the drive? There doesn’t seem to be any screws to remove, and it won’t just slide out. I don’t want to break anything. Anyone have any suggestions, or know of any websites with details and pics that could help? Thanks in advance.

What kind of dell do you have?

Have you gotten the case open? Because you’ll probably have to go from the inside.

Drive will go backwards. It will not be removed by getting it out from front. Open the casing and after removing screws or hooks slide it backwards it will come out and replace the slot with new one

Lots of different case have lots of different ways of removing drives.

You may need to remove the “front” cover of the PC off. Take a side door off and take a look. There might be screws keeping it on. The drives may be on slides – press each tab in and slide out. They may be on a tray screwed in from around the front of the drive, after you take the front off you might see this. The drive might be secured by 4 screws – two on each side – you will see this when you take the side cover off. The drive may be able to be slid back.

Lots of possibilities. No particular right answer. I hope something I mentioned above gets it removed.

Check the computers owners’ manual or visit the tech support page of the computer’s manufacturer.

Some (probably most newer computers) have some kind of latch instead of the old mounting screws. Look for a knob with an arrow on it and push or pull in the direction the arrow is pointing.

    Be careful and good luck.

To take the facing out, you should not pull it out. You should flip it and then it will slide out.
To take your CD out of the old drive, there is a very tiny pine whole on top the eject bottom.

Sounds complicated, but it really isn’t.
Open the case & look to see if you can find the screws that hold the drive into place. You might have to take off both side panels of your case to get access to the drive(you should have 2 or 3 screws in the back that hold them on). Unplug the drive from the back, (remembering which plugs go where for installation)
Remove the 4 screws from your case. It should slide right out with the plate & everything intact(If you can’t slide it out towards the front, try the back), Unless you have a front flat flap that is in front of your drive that is part of the case (In that case you have to take off the front part of the case to uninstall it).
Let me know if you need any more help.

I have a Dell, most come with a manual, but its not one you can hold it’s on the drive.
    Try doing a search for:
    C:\dell\docs\manual\eom.pdf
If you had given model number I could have done this online for you.
If you can’ find it on your mach go here:
    http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/en/manuals?c=us&l=en&s=gen

    Hope this helped
