That is fine as long as it is vegetable peels, and not food scraps. You can add egg shells too.
Yes. You can use really anything you want but just be weary of the possible smell and bugs that may find your container. My suggestion…. place your kitchen scraps in a large freezer bag and put them in the freezer. You will have a compost-cicle. They can stay until the bag is full or you are walking out the the compost pile. No smell or bugs! Good luck and kudos for having a compost pile!
I like the compost-cicle! Actually the frig would be just fine. Since the scraps are fruit, veggie and maybe bread, there shouldnot be any oil staining or purtrifying from animal products. Actually, if you really want to get absurd, you can take the scraps and whiz them in a blender along with water and then take them to the compost. They will decompose a lot faster.
I use a blue plastic mixing bowl to store my kitchen scraps. The bowl sits on the counter in a far corner and gets emptied every other day. Since you shouldn’t compost oils, meat, or dairy products, it shouldn’t get too smelly.
I also compost my dryer lint. Or if you have a bird-feeding area, put the dryer lint near the feeders. Birds like to use dyer lint to build their nests.
