Question by Batty: annoying habits-how to deal with them?
I live with my boyfriend and everything is fine. We’ve been living here for a little less than a year but I’ve noticed that the small things that never bothered me before are now starting to irritate me a lot.

He comes home and takes his shoes and socks off and leaves them under the coffee table. Sometimes there will be like four pairs of dirty socks just sitting under the table. Who does that? I have tried pointedly taking the socks as he pulls them off and putting them in the hamper but he still does it. We have a place for his shoes but he will insist on leaving them under the coffee table and it annoys me to no end.

Also, he is one of those people who keeps the receipt for everything he ever buys, ever for any reason. Del Taco? KEEP THE RECEIPT. He refuses to get online statements from anyone because he believes that with a paper statement he can catch the companies “cheating him” or “screwing up”. He takes these receipts and unopened letters and scraps of paper and just leaves them everywhere. They’re covering the entire top of the coffee table, and the dining room table, and the headboard, and both of our dresser tops. I got him a plastic bin that fits in a bookshelf for him to store his papers and go through them but the ones I put in there he flat out ignored and the other papers continue to build up. Whenever I try to at least stack the papers so we have room somewhere he gets annoyed and acts like everything in the pile was of the most dire importance and that by stacking them I have lost everything and it’s gone forever. He asks me not to touch his stuff.

These two things really really get on my nerves and I don’t know what to do about it. When I mention it at all he gets really defensive and starts pointing out all the annoying things he thinks I do, like forgetting to jiggle the handle on the toilet so the water doesn’t run.

Any help?

.Aren’t you the lucky one.Time for a kitkat. He’s a hoarder and will use every bit of space for his important papers.Till eventually there’s no room for you.Get out now because this isn’t going to get any better

How wow!!! I feel you guys are living with me!!!
I have the exact same issues with my boyfriend.
Little receipts everywhere, and so dear to life! The toothpaste is always…next to the toothglass/brushes, never in. Socks and other laundry on the floor… and he never seems to see the dishes piling up nor seems unnerved by the mess in the living or bedroom. I just can’t put up with it. It’s been less than a year, but this really gets on my nerves.

I’m trying to make him understand that this is just like sharing a flat with a stranger (but with benefits). Hence, don’t mess up the flat, keep your stuff off the floor, simple things! Like when you used to live with your parents: would you leave this in any other place than your sanctuary bedroom? No. Here, it should be the same, except that the bedroom should also remain tidy-like.

How do old marriages do to overcome this????

He’s a great man, loves me to bits and I love him too. But several times a day – for a few minutes – I feel like throwing him out of the window.
